“Project Native has become, in a very short time, an important resource in the Berkshires for native plants and trees. I have
been working with them to diversify the ecology of my property and make it more hospitable for the native animals, birds and
beneficial insects,as well as beautiful for the benefit of the community I live in. They have an extraordinary knowledge base
and desire to work with individuals, as well as groups, to create an environment that is sustainable and enjoyable for us all.”

Berkshire County sustains some of the most significant wetlands in Massachusetts. Project Native is working to minimize the
impact of human development on wetlands by providing plants and educational materials to assist individuals and conservation organizations
with wetland restoration projects.
Project Native recently completed a large scale restoration project along the Housatonic River. Project Native received funding from the
Natural Resources Damages Grant to partner with Taft Farms to convert thirteen acres of fallow farm field into floodplain forest. Many
floodplain forests were cut for farming and, as a result, critical habitat was lost. The month-long restoration project reestablished this
important buffer. In addition to providing erosion control, riverside plantings cool the groundwater that runs into the river. Maintaining
cool water temperatures is essential to the health of the Housatonic River. Project Native also removed invasive plant populations that
threaten the health and diversity of the land. The Natural Resources Damages Grant was established to help repair damage done to the river
by the release of chemical wastes, primarily polychlorinated biphenyls (“PCBs”), by the General Electric facility in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The contamination negatively affected aquatic organisms and their habitats, as well as water-related natural resources such as waterfowl and
predators that consume contaminated aquatic organisms.
Project Native's Restoration Team installed several gardens, including a woodland restoration at Porches Inn in North Adams and several wetland restorations at area homes.
In 2010, Project Native planted 1,400 trees, 4,000 perennials and sowed 84 pounds of native seed as part of two restoration projects along the banks of the Housatonic River.
